Book Reviews of Simply Fly
A fantastic and enlightening book!
A very good read! You will learn to search your soul and to learn about logical thinking - what else can a courageous soul can acheive with sheer persistence.
A Real Indian Rags to Riches Story
Sometime back I listened to the Stanford Graduation speech by Steve Jobs and how he exhorted everyone to follow their passion. And how later in life that the dots would connect and you would be truly ready to do your calling. This book is eminently readable roller coaster ride of the author's life. He truly followed his passion and in the end the dots connected. Whether it was being a farmer, or a mobike dealer, or a politician (contested for MLA seat on BJP ticket), or helicopter hiring or Deccan Aviation - it was always a passion for him. His exit from Deccan was also timed perfectly. The book is very engaging and is highly recommended biography for the entrepreneurship spirit it conveys.
Excellent book for entrepreneurs and businessmen
Simply Fly is the best book I have read in the recent times. This is a first person account from someone who built the first chopper service company and a low cost airliner in India. This is the first person account of a humble middle class Indian who grew in a village, became an army officer, built a farm, ventured in auto business, politics and eventually
Deccan Aviation the chopper service company and Deccan Airways the airline of the "Common man" of India.
They say - "Eye on the sky and feet on the ground". Gopinath has lived it upto it. Feet on the ground is his love of Nature, Farms and earth. Eye on the sky is literally his love of flying and aircrafts.
Former President Mr. APJ Abdul Kalam has mentioned tha this book should become a text book in all management institutions.
True! Some chapters should be used in high schools too.
Gopinath is a master story teller. I cannot believe this is his first book. He narrates events that his friends become our friends.
The charcters like Manje Gowda (his neighbor in the farm), his army buddies Samuel and Vishnu who join him in his business will stay in memory for a long time.
The book has many many adversities which are true incidents and Gopinath tells us how he overcame them. When he landed up in Singapore with Samuel to get the second helicopter leased to him, the vendor hands him a contract with an amount that is 2 or 3 times the agreed value! And Gopi has only ten minutes to leave the country. Gopinath negotiates with the vendor and successfully reduces the rates to the original terms.
Gopinath travels for TWO full years from Bangalore to New Delhi to get a NOC (No Objection Certificate) from the
Indian Government. Finally he gets it after meeting the minister himself.
There are many lessons for the ambitious in this book. The author stays in our memory as a humble, compassionate, hardworking and brave person who is a pioneer in many ways.
