Description:This manual of procedures for diagnosis and treatment of urologic disease in dogs and cats emphasizes surgically treated diseases of the urinary bladder, prostate, and urethra.
Purpose:The purpose is to provide veterinarians in general practice with a practical guide to diagnostic and therapeutic urologic procedures. The intent is to provide a reference, the components of which are accessed on an as-needed basis, rather than a training guide to be read in its entirety. This book meets a previously unaddressed need in veterinary medicine for a step-by-step guide to urologic techniques for general practitioners.
Audience:It is intended to meet the needs of small animal practitioners with a commitment to providing in-house diagnostic and treatment options for patients with congenital or acquired urologic disease. It also serves as a useful step-by-step guide to common urological procedures which may be necessary to stabilize as well as evaluate a patient prior to referral for further urologic management.
Features:Part 1 of the book's two parts covers general concepts in history acquisition and physical examination, and practical diagnostic techniques including detailed instructions for performing and interpreting special radiographic studies. Part 2 addresses specific clinical urologic problems such as dysuria and urinary incontinence. The book is illustrated throughout with abundant diagrams and images of exceptionally high quality. Each technique is described in clear but concise terms accompanied by excellent pertinent images demonstrating the procedural steps. However, some of the tables and diagrams would benefit from clearer captions. In some portions, the need to refer back and forth from images to numbers in the text becomes cumbersome, especially when they are on different pages. The scope of the book is actually far narrower than is suggested by the title. Nonsurgical disorders and aspects of treatment are largely excluded and testicular and vestibulovulvar disorders are not addressed.
Assessment:This book is extremely valuable as an illustrated, step-by-step guide to diagnostic and therapeutic urologic procedures in the dog and cat. A title reflecting the very specific focus of the book would be more appropriate.
