Editorial Reviews

In 1959 Fidel Castro ascended to power in Cuba. After a five year revolutionary struggle, Castro and his supporters overthrew the government and established Cuba as a communist state. Almost immediately, Castro's regime was viewed by the American government as a threat in the region. In short order a US sponsored invasion of Cuba was defeated at the Bay of Pigs. Then the introduction of Soviet nuclear missiles to Cuba triggered a global crisis that nearly triggered thermonuclear war. Over the years a ban on trade with Cuba and travel to the island nation has been imposed by the American government. The history and efficacy of this embargo is the subject of this illustrated work. Here author Gitlin does an excellent job of relating the history, effects, and legality of the American sanctioning process. In telling this story the author points out the strong and weak points of conflicting arguments. For example, the United States government has historically viewed Cuba as an oppressive state that foments revolution in other nations. Conversely, many European nations have refused to honor the American sanctions pointing out that Cuba is no more or less oppressive than many regimes around the world that do not face American sanctions. It is through this balanced approach that Gitlin provides his readers with a first rate analysis of a longstanding and controversial political issue. Reviewer: Greg M. Romaneck
