Some of the excitement of the subject, tornadoes, is diminished by the pedantic text. "Tornado forecasting is hard because tornadoes act in strange ways. Tornadoes sometimes happen with little warning." "You may be indoors when a tornado hits. It so, you need to think fast. If your house has a basement, take shelter there. Below ground is the best place to be." There is some difference about safety outside in a storm: for lightning one is advised to "crouch with knees under you," but for wind, one is advised to "lie down flat." The small photographs do not do the subject justice. This is a chapter book with internal headings and footnotes defining words. There is an epilogue in which Dr. Charles Doswell, a storm chaser, talks of his experiences. The book has a glossary, bibliography, useful addresses, Internet sites, and an index. This could be used as a reference book on the subject. The book's Reading Consultant is Timothy Rasinski, and Content Consultant is Charles A. Doswell, III. 2003, Capstone Curriculum Publishing/Capstone Press, Ages 7 to 10.
