This series by Pebble Bilingual Books about character development has a fatal flaw: no child will sit through these books. They are dry and all moral. The child featured in the accompanying photographs performs good deeds gladly; she feeds her goldfish, makes her bed in the morning, helps her father with the dishes, arrives punctually to her swimming lessons, and prepares for school by bringing the appropriate supplies. The book shows the girl's responsibility in varied areas of life: at home, school, and the general community. Such varied settings emphasizes that a child must be responsible in all things she does. Yet, because the child's virtue of responsibility is presented factually, "People can depend on me. I am responsible," the reader does not need to figure out that she is being responsible. There is little room for discussion as to the child's responsibility, and no demonstration of the fact that it may be difficult to be responsible. With such a perfect child, the reader or audience may have trouble identifying with and learning from her. 2004, Capstone Press Pebble Bilingual Books, Ages 2 to 5.
