If there is any Indian scientist whose name would without fail appear in any text-book on modern physics, it would be of S.N. Bose. 'Bosons' are the elementary particles, such as photons, named after him. More than half the particles in the universe are Bosons!
Although Bose made theoretical contributions to modern physics by a stroke of genius, he strove hard throughout his life to create a favourable environment for pursuance of the much needed experimental physics in the country. He also took pains to bring science to the masses in their own language. A connoisseur of music and literature, Bose was himself an excellent Esraj player:
This is the inspiring story of a legendary scientist and passionate teacher; who made an indelible mark in the annals of science.
Dilip M. Salwi is a Delhi-based science writer. A winner of several national awards and fellowships for popularising science, he also writes science fiction and plays involving science and scientists.
