About the Book: The Night Train at Deoli and Other Stories

Predominantly set in the valleys of Uttarakhand, where Ruskin Bond has made his home, the stories in this book are warm, intimate portraits of life in the Himalayan foothills. Apart from gently satirical studies about village and small-town braggarts and petty officials, this collection offers several affectionate accounts of people who, consciously or otherwise, need each other: people in love or in need of love, the awkward adolescent and the timid lover. This collection also has several stunning tales that mourn the gradual erosion of the beauty of the hills (and the gentle people who live in them) with the coming of the steel, dust and worries of modern civilization. Animated by Ruskin Bonds rare humanity and compassion, this book is a thoroughly rewarding read.
