When about seven years of age, as I remember, I first felt the love of God shed abroad in my heart, and though at the time I was like Samuel when the Lord called to him, and he thought it had been Eli, and knew not that it was God that spoke, and so took but little notice of it, yet, from a repetition of similar manifestations, not long after, I was clearly ascertained that it was of the Lord. As I advanced in years I was favored with many bedewing seasons, in which my heart was drawn to God, and made happy in a sensible enjoyment of His fatherly regard to me; and altho' these seasons were not very frequent, nor of very lasting duration, yet their effects I trust, were of lasting benefit, and the remembrance thereof is still precious to me. They served to draw my mind inward and heavenward, and to beget a love and reverence in my heart for piety and religion, for the Scriptures, and for examples therein recorded of people eminent for devotedness to God, and for good people every where. They also served to beget in me a true fear of God -- a fear of offending Him, founded as well on an unwillingness to forfeit His love, as on fear of punishment. Thus the Lord Jesus was with me in my tender years, manifesting His love unto me and thereby drawing me unto Himself; revealing Himself unto me from time to time in a wonderful manner, and begetting desires in me after Him and a further knowledge of His ways, according to my years and capacity for these things.
