David Morris Denton was born in Robbinsville, NC, in 1931, one of six siblings. He attended the public schools in Graham County, and following high school enlisted in the United States Air Force for four years. Following the military he returned to NC, and for more than a year was caught up in a search for what was to become the next state in his development. He earned a diploma (A.A.) from Cumberland College, Williamsburg, KY, a B.A. degree from Lenoir Rhyne College, and an M.A. degree from California State University, and was given the degree of Doctor of Pedagogy (Pd.D.) by Western Maryland College.
