The autobiography of Frederick Douglass, a great orator and writer and a leading figure in the abolitionist movement. He escaped slavery in 1838. He lectured throughout the East at abolitionist meetings, recounting his life as a slave. His first autobiography, The Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass: an American slave revealed his master's identity and he took refuge in England where he was helped by sympathetic liberals to buy his freedom. After returning to America he published the abolitionist North Star, the first of a series of journals he was to create.
