Having worked at the Library of Congress or LC as we always called it, I was interested in seeing how well the author presented its history and development. In forty-eight pages Santella describes the origins, buildings, significant contributions of librarians, how the great collection was destroyed not once but twice, and how the Library has grown to be one of the largest in the world. The passage in 1870 of the Copyright Act which required anyone seeking a copyright to send two copies of their work to the Library allowed for exponential growth. What Santella makes clear and others have not, is that the Library selects what it wants to add to its collections. The text flows smoothly from the very beginnings of the Library to the present with the Library serving now as the nation's library, not just fulfilling its original mission to support Congress. The pictures of the earlier buildings, the newly restored Jefferson Building and others are appropriately placed and provide a good look at the Library. Santella's book is a good choice for schools and public libraries. 2006, Compass Point Books, Ages 7 to 10.
