The role of the sun as it creates seasons, controls the water cycle, affects climate, and provides heat is explained in this book. Saunders-Smith focuses on describing the facts of sunlight distribution. She discusses the differences between life along the equator and life at the poles, however, she does not provide a clear explanation of what the equator is. The glossary definition tells the reader it is halfway between the northernmost and southernmost points of the earth. But for the reader with a limited concept of geography this explanation means little. Much of the book would have benefited from explanatory diagrams as illustrations, instead of stock photographs of the sun. The facts in this book can be confusing for an independent reader and this book would be most useful when accompanied by a teacher's explanations. La luz del sol suffers from repetitive presentation of unclear facts and uninformative photographs; it is one of the weaker books in Saunders-Smith's series about weather. 2004, Capstone Press Pebble Bilingual Books, Ages 6 to 10.
