About the Book: India's Tryst with Destiny
Policy discourse in India tends to be dominated by assertionsunsupported by facts, with the media indulging one and all withoutproper scrutiny. Often, the result is the creation andperpetuationof myths of all kinds. Thus, many believe today thatpoverty, illiteracy and ill-health afflict India because itsleadership ignored them in favour of growth for its own sake; thatthe economic reforms that focused on growth have failed to help thepoor, especially the socially disadvantaged; that any gains claimedin poverty alleviation derive from the use of progressively lowerpoverty lines; and that even if gains have been made, with one intwo children suffering from malnutrition, reforms have doneprecious little to improve health outcomes.
In this definitive book on economic reforms in IndiasinceIndependence, Bhagwati and Panagariya decisively demolishthese andother myths, which critics use as weapons to wound andmaim thereforms. Using systematic data and analysis, theyforcefully showthat once the debris of critiques of India's reformsis cleared, itbecomes evident that intensification of reforms-thatallowssustained rapid growth-is the only way to lift millions outofpoverty, illiteracy and ill-health. They argue that only growthcanprovide sufficient revenues for the provision of education andgoodhealth for the masses.
