John F. Moran

This book has been published every four years or so since 1966. This is the ninth edition of the text, which has become a standard in cardiovascular medicine. It has 81 contributing authors. The purpose throughout the years has been to provide readers with a practical approach to the treatment of patients with cardiovascular disease. It is recommended for any practitioner for an extensive review of cardiovascular subjects, as well as for students, medical residents, and cardiovascular fellows. In this ninth edition, the number of chapters has been reduced by about 30 percent, but the number of pages has increased. This reduces duplication across chapters and improves combinations of subject matter. A good example of this is the chapter on lipids (Chapter 53), which has been expanded from 8 to 23 pages. The importance of molecular biology and genetics has been emphasized with much new material included in the first section of the book under the title, "Basic Foundations of Cardiology. The general evaluation of the patient has been revised, with expansions in the sections of nuclear cardiology (Chapter 17). Nuclear cardiology has been given higher priority in the ninth edition. It includes a totally revised section on echocardiography emphasizing more two dimensional studies than M-mode studies. This is a well illustrated text with a helpful index and table of contents. It is an attractive book, which now boasts an increase of more than double the number of color plates. There are extensive references following each chapter that date to 1995 and 1996 in many instances. It is a well recognized standard text reference in cardiology.
