Not illustrated.1901 Excerpt: ... PART II. The Free Church In Dalziel SINCE 1843. THE year 1843 was the most memorable year in the modern history of Scotland and its parishes. It is familiarly known as the year of the Disruption which ended "The Ten Years' Conflict" of the Church Courts against encroachments of the Civil Courts upon them, and began a more glorious chapter in the history of the Church of Scotland Free. When the year opened the Disruption had already taken place in intention at the Convocation a few weeks before, when 480 ministers solemnly declared their determination, if no satisfactory measure of relief was forthcoming, to resign their civil advantages in the Establishment, which they could no longer hold in consistency with the free and full exercise of their spiritual functions. This was the real Disruption, . which was carried out in an orderly way by the Assembly at its meeting on 18th May as the Act of the Supreme Court of the Church. It was not reckoned the best thing that individuals should immediately here and there demit their charges, but should wait for the answer or action of the State, and make due preparation for such a step by sending deputations throughout the Church to explain the state of matters and solicit their sympathy with the cause of Christ. This measure was very successful, and showed that Christian people generally were with them and preparations in progress to meet the emergency which, after the appeal to Parliament in March was rejected, was inevitable. It was an education of the people throughout most of the parishes of Scotland, which prepared them for coming out too, whilst Dr. Chalmers' Sustentation Fund was in full swing before there was a Free Church at all.
