Engineering Mechanics and Elements of Civil Engineering (as Per VTU Syllabus)

This book is designed for undergraduate civil engineering students of Vishweshwaraiah Technological University (VTU) Karnataka.

The book is divided into two parts. The first part introduces the basic elements of civil engineering. It highlights the role and functions of a civil engineer and then explains the basic components of construction management. Various materials used in construction are then discussed. Apart from the conventionally used materials, various alternative, composite and smart materials are also explained. Surveying is discussed next including remote sensing and Geographic Information System (GIS).

The second part presents the basic principles of engineering mechanics. The concepts of coplaner forces, friction and inertia are suitably explained.

Illustrative examples and practice problems are included throughout the book to provide a thorough understanding of the subject.

About The Author:

Dr. S.S. Bhavikatti studied at BVB College of Engineering and Technology, Hubli for his BE (Civil) degree and graduated from Karnataka University, Dharwad in 1963, sharing first rank with another candidate. The same year he joined Karnataka Regional Engineering College, Surathkal (presently NITK, Surathkal), as a teacher. He secured ME degree in Structural Engineering in 1967 from University of Roorkee, Roorkee (presently IIT Roorkee) under Technical Teachers Training Programme and Ph.D. degree in 1977 from IIT Delhi under Quality Improvement Programme. He served at NITK, Surathkal in different capacities like Head of Civil Engg. Department; Chairman, Centre for Continuing Education; Chairman, Central Computer Centre and Dean (Administration). From November 2001 to November 2005, he served at SDM College of Engineering & Technology, Dharwad. He also served at RYMEC, Bellary as Principal for 1 year 9 months. Presently he is Emeritus Fellow, the fellowship offered by AICTE, New Delhi and now is serving at BVB College of Engg. and Tech., Hubli. He has published more than 60 technical papers and 23 books. He has guided 62 students for M.Tech. thesis and 5 students for Ph.D. He was a member of organising scientific committees of international seminars organised by IASS held at Taegue (South Korea) in 1990, Tokyo (Japan) in 1993 and Taipei (Taiwan) in 1997. He is also a member of several Indian and International professional bodies.


Dr. S.K. Duggal is currently Professor & Head in Civil Engineering at Motilal Nehru National Institute of Technology, Allahabad. He obtained his B.E., M.E. and Ph.D. degrees from Allahabad University. He has an experience of more than 32 years of teaching at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels. Apart from the numerous research papers that he has presented in several National and International Conferences and Journals, he is one of the reputed consultants for quality control of building materials.
