Bill Watterson II (born July 5, 1958) is an American cartoonistand the author of Calvin and Hobbes.

Some of his other popular books include, The Essential Calvinand Hobbes: A Calvin and Hobbes Treasury, Calvin and HobbesScientific Progress Goes "Boink", The Calvin and Hobbes Lazy SundayBook, and The Indispensable Calvin And Hobbes: A Calvin And HobbesTreasury.

He drew his first cartoon at the age of eight. He spent most ofhis childhood alone, drawing and cartooning. During his schoolyears this continued, and he drew cartoons for his high schoolyearbook and newspaper. He discovered comic strips like Krazy Kat,Pogo, and Charles Schulzs Peanuts, which later inspired andinfluenced his aspiration to become a professional cartoonist. In1980, Watterson graduated with a B.A. in political science fromKenyon. He was offered a job for a six-month trial period by TheCincinnati Post for drawing political cartoons. In 1988, Wattersonwas awarded the National Cartoonists Societys Humor Comic StripAward and in 1986, he was the youngest person in history to receivethe Societys Reuben Award. Watterson received the Reuben Award forthe second time in 1988. He was a nominee for the third time in1992.
