The editors provide this fifth edition of a text that has become a classic resource in community and public health nursing. The purpose is to provide guidance to those entering the field of community health nursing from a variety of experts. With this text the editors also entice informed practitioners to help shape the future of community healthcare through political involvement. This resource serves as a foundation for designing community and public health nursing. The content is written specifically for community health nursing students and community health nurses in practice. It would be valuable for libraries as a resource for community oriented and public health providers. The text includes 46 chapters divided into seven sections. Chapters begin with an outline, objectives, and key terms. In addition, features include Did You Know?, What Do You Think?, How To, Nursing Tips, Research Briefs, Canadian Perspectives, and Critical Thinking Activities. Full color has been added throughout the text. There are eleven diverse appendixes, an extensive glossary, and an index, all of which are a help to the learner. Several new aspects are added to this edition including chapters on Parish and Block Nursing and Public Health Nursing in the Local Health Department. New content and features are added throughout such as information on forensic nursing. The text reflects advances in technology via the CD-ROM and new web links. This is a valuable resource to continue shaping community health nursing.

Reviewer: Penny Wolfe Moore, RNC, PhD (Southwestern Adventist University)
Description: This is a comprehensive book dedicated to community and public health topics. This is the sixth edition; the fifth edition was published in 2000.
Purpose: Maria Salmon writes in the foreword, "The scope and depth of knowledge required by students and faculty alike demands educational resources that are authoritative, rigorous, timely, and interesting. Textbooks that meet this standard are rare and precious. Fortunately, this sixth edition of Community and Public Health Nursing not only meets but surpasses the standard." This is an excellent book; the purpose has been met.
Audience: This is a text that serves as both educational tool and on-going reference timely and timeless. It works well in both undergraduate and graduate contexts and can be used in survey and specialty courses." The size and cost of this book would not make it suitable for a survey or partial course, but it is terrific for a comprehensive community course. The authors are credible but of the 77 contributors, none appear to be a hands-on practitioner.
Features: The book is divided into seven sections covering all the expected issues and topics of community and public health nursing. New to this edition: evidence-based practice, Healthy People 2010 boxes, "the Cutting Edge" boxes with significant issues and new approaches, and "Additional Resources" boxes. Additional student learning resources include a Web site with case studies, test question, Web links and a glossary. Instructor resources include a manual, computerized test bank, image collection, and content resources. Additional faculty resources are available on "evolve" (http://evolve.elsevier.com/Stanhope) such as the instructor's community, PowerPoint slides and Web links.
Assessment: Like previous books by the same editors, this one is excellent. One of the strongest topics is epidemiology. The graphics are unique and interesting, and the explanations of levels of prevention, methods in epidemiology, and bioterrorism are complete and understandable. This latest edition is justified due to the fast and significant change in community and public health.
