  • Synopsis

Arguing that the relative paucity of scholarly studies on forms of incarceration in colonial societies adds to our misunderstanding of incarceration in postcolonial societies, Harper (creative and performing arts, U. of Wales) presents 15 essays that, from a variety of geographic and disciplinary perspectives, attempt to parse the meaning of the carceral experience under imperialism and colonialism. Specific topics addressed include captivity narratives of Tasmania, the language of literary production and detention in Kenya, the textual enclosure of the encouragement of American "Chinatowns," the placement of Brendan Behan's Borstal Boy within the traditions of nationalism in Irish prison literature, and the relationship between South Africàs Truth and Reconciliation Commission and apartheid prison narratives in the construction of national memory.
