Book Summary of City Of Darkness

He's passed his college entrance exams with flying colors. He can do pretty much whatever he wants. But what teenager Ron Morgan wants most is for his father to quit telling him what to do. Quit running his life. What better way to unwind than having a last blowout on Labor Day in the domed playground of Fun City: Manhattan.

Inside the dome, however, Ron loses his wallet and identity card. Worse, he's trapped when the dome closes for the season. There's no way out. Gangs roam the street. Food is scarce. Ron is on his own.

All Ron wanted was some fun. He'll be lucky to escape New York alive....

In a future when nearly everyone lives in suburban Tracts, a weekend in New York City represents the ultimate freedom to sixteen-year-old Ron Morgan. In this time, the City is closed for ten months out of the year due to its former overpopulation, crime and the continuing threat of an epidemic. It is opened only during the summer for vacations. Soon after Ron enters NYC, however, his ID is stolen and he is unable to leave before the gates close for winter. He then discovers that some people are unable to leave the City ever—they were born without an ID or were left there when it closed originally. Through his skills as a mechanic, he is able to earn a place in one of the City's gangs, but this is a precarious existence. The white gangs are forever at war with one another, and on the other side of town, all of the people of color have joined together to create a formidable enemy, under the leadership of Timmy Jim. As the story progresses, Ron realizes the unfair system is being perpetuated by the cops and black market suppliers. Finally, Ron is able to escape with the help of the dangerous and beautiful Sylvia, and he leaves with the determination to change the Outside world for the better. Bova's prose is both gripping and highly readable. The narration contains a gritty realism, which looks unflinchingly at the dark aspects of inner-city life, including its racial tension, and its victims. 2003, A Tor Book/Tom Doherty Associates, Ages 13 to Adult.
