Anatomy & Physiology are core components of the nursing curriculum. All nursing students must have a basic understanding of the make up of the human body. Therefore it is essential that they can study from a textbook which is well written, clear, concise and easy to use. With this book Dr Singh explains and illustrates everything that a student nurse needs to know, as well as providing an introduction to common diseases that affect different organs of the body.
The appendices to the book also provide an aid to further learning, in the form of atlases of important parts of the body. The text is accompanied by over 450 illustrations to facilitate and enhance understanding.
Reviewer: Loretta L. White , DNS(Indiana State University)
Description: This book provides fundamental information about human anatomy and physiology. All body systems are introduced along with selected system-related disorders.
Purpose: The author states that many nursing students do not have adequate access to anatomy and physiology texts. Therefore, the purpose of this book is to fill that gap with essential information for those nursing students. This U.K. book is written by an Indian anatomy professor, and it may indeed be appropriate for overseas students who may not have adequate access to educational materials. If that is the case, this book does meet the author's objective.
Audience: As stated by the author, this book is written for nursing students. However, due to its elemental nature, it is more appropriate for early beginners seeking entry into a health-related career.
Features: The book begins with a general survey of the organ systems, naming the structures of which they are composed. Subsequent chapters detail these same systems at a more complex level. Included are related chapters such as chemistry and cell structure. Medical terminology is highlighted throughout the text and a thorough index ends the book. Each chapter is filled with drawings to illustrate concepts. Some chapters have very brief but useful descriptions of diseases related to the system. There are some shortcomings, most notably the lack of photographs. Although illustrations are numerous and for the most part well done, some of them are so overlaid that they are difficult to follow. There is limited use of charts and tables to summarize information.
Assessment: Many other basic anatomy and physiology texts (such as Hole's Essentials of Human Anatomy and Physiology, 9th edition, Shier et al. (McGraw-Hill, 2006)) are superior in both content and presentation and are representative of the general expectations of nursing students. This book is not up to the standards of anatomy and physiology texts commonly used in the U.S. However, it may be very acceptable in other countries.
